OBSTACLES TO GETTING HELP
At Red Door Life we understand there are many obstacles that might prevent one from seeking treatment. We want to let you know that we have walked this road too and are here to guide you along the way. The following list is many of the obstacles we see that delay or prevent those in need from seeking the help they truly need. If you or a loved one are experiencing any of the issues below, our team is ready to help navigate these hurdles as we assist you in taking the brave steps toward treatment and recovery.
1. DENIAL OR MINIMIZING: "I DON'T HAVE A PROBLEM." or “IT’S NOT THAT BAD”
This is the most common and trickiest thought one might have about their addiction. Here at Red Door Life, we work with you to understand the complexities of these thoughts and we know that being forced into treatment doesn't work. One way to evaluate if you are in denial or minimizing the issue is to look at the world you have created around you. To do this, we look through the lens of The 12 Dimensions of Human Health and Wellness. For example: How are your relationships? Are they beneficial- do they inspire and uplift you?- And are you able to show up for others? How are your relationships with your family? Is your life’s path unfolding as you would like?- Is your career, your performance at work, or school being affected? We are here to help you answer these questions and help you find the solutions. Often it is difficult to see the depths of our own suffering, or what our behavior is truly costing us. Compassionate, objective help in evaluating the truth of what is going on in your life can be invaluable in making the decision to get help.
2. FEAR OF STIGMA: "WHAT WILL PEOPLE THINK OF ME?"
We get it. There are certain terms and titles we don’t agree with when it comes to referring to people in active addiction. They hurt and they’re cruel. They’re damaging and we may fear being branded permanently. We fear being categorized, stigmatized, and abandoned. But shame causes isolation, and isolation is a huge factor in substance abuse worsening, overdose, mental health issues, and suicide. At Red Door Life we believe in “undoing the aloneness”. Taking the steps to seek treatment and begin to get well allows you to take back control of the narrative of your life. You will begin to feel the power of compassion, love, and supportive people in your life here at Red Door Life. You will realize that one of the bravest things you can do is admit you need help. Help to stop the downward spiral and fulfill the greatest vision of your existence! The truth is that the people you thought would judge you, will in fact respect you for making a very brave decision.
3. WORK OBLIGATIONS: "I CAN'T MISS WORK."
At Red Door Life, we understand that being engaged in meaningful work is a vital part of your future and improves your recovery outcome. At Red Door Life we want to support you in every possible way to allow you to continue on your professional path. We offer customized detox services and support so clients who cannot leave their lives and enter a treatment center can continue to fulfill their obligations with the help of our sober companions and multidisciplinary teams that conform to your individualized needs. We have had the pleasure of working with some of the most successful people in the professional and creative arts world to allow them the ability to continue to operate their businesses or even continue their studio sessions, movie shoots, and concert tours. We also have co-working space in our residences and support our clients in continuing to be able to show up for their work commitments should they choose to enter our residential detox and treatment center.
4. FAMILY RESPONSIBILITIES: "I NEED TO TAKE CARE OF MY FAMILY."
At Red Door Life, we honor your family during this process- integrating them into your treatment plan however fits best. Often, we find that people dealing with active addiction require some space and time away from family to gain a more complete perspective on their addiction and how it affects their family. Often the family of one struggling with substance abuse feels depleted or traumatized, and so through individual and group sessions, we work with the family members as well as our clients to restore the bonds of love that heal.
We also offer sober companion services and multidisciplinary teams that conform to your individualized needs, should you decide that you cannot enter our residential center because you need to care for your family.
5. FEELING DIFFERENT: "THEY WON'T UNDERSTAND ME."
The beautiful thing about life is that we are all individual and unique in our own ways. The misconception about this beauty is that it must be lost once you enter treatment. You must conform or hide aspects of yourself. Some might feel they will lose or have to hide their identity and their individuality. Or they may feel they won't be seen or heard in the ways that really matter on the deepest levels. Here at Red Door Life we honor each and every person's journey and work to ensure that they are cared for and respected in ways they might never have been before. Our staff is as unique as our clients, and are a diverse representation of many incredible communities. Our inclusivity and ability to tailor specialty treatment programs for the LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC communities set the standard for exceptional treatment that brings together the similarities, not the differences.
6. FINANCIAL CONCERNS: "I CAN'T AFFORD IT."
The investment in your health and well-being is one of the most impactful investments you can make. Sobriety and mental well-being are the foundation from which all else in life grows. We offer custom programs tailored to your specific needs and will work with you on a treatment plan that’s right for you. Call our Admissions Team now to give us the opportunity to explore options with you.
7. FEAR OF WITHDRAWAL: "I'M SCARED OF THE WITHDRAWAL SYMPTOMS."
Whether you’re detoxing from alcohol, opiates, cocaine, methamphetamine, fentanyl, heroin, benzos, pills, or a combination of substances, the symptoms of withdrawal can be very dangerous and often life-threatening. The fear of withdrawal is very real and for a lot of us, keeps us from being able to begin the recovery journey. At Red Door Life, we use a medically supervised detox process to allow you the safest and most comfortable setting for you to be able to successfully detoxify your system. With vigilant oversight from our medical team, many medications can also help with withdrawal symptoms. With 24-hour, 7-day-a-week care dedicated to you, we will help minimize the symptoms of withdrawal while alleviating the fear of having to take this step alone. We also provide chef-prepared gourmet meals and many holistic modalities that can relieve the pain and stress of detox such as massage, acupuncture, yoga, and anything else that you would find soothing.
8. PREVIOUS BAD EXPERIENCE: "REHAB DIDN'T WORK FOR ME LAST TIME."
This is a very common occurrence- we hear it all the time. We believe this is because the mainstream model of care is ineffective, as evidenced by NIH statistics that the relapse rate is 40-60%, or 85% of people relapse within one year of leaving treatment. The treatment industry in general offers “cookie cutter” programs that emulate a car wash model with a 30/60/90-day residential stay and after that, you go back to the life that was making you unwell in the first place without any integration or support. We invite you to read our Testimonials and experience our innovative, completely unique model of care. Often treatment centers are not equipped to handle high-acuity cases and crisis management, but we have decades of experience in those areas.
Through our proprietary model of care The 12 Dimensions of Human Health and Wellness, we collaborate with you to create a customized multidisciplinary team to help you uncover the underlying issues that might have led you to addiction in the first place and help you do the deeper work. We adjust as needed. We support you in all areas of your life. Unfortunately, sometimes relapse is part of one’s recovery path. Instead of abandoning our clients in their worst time of need, we help them return to safety. We offer truly individualized care and custom lengths of stay as often the brain’s executive function can take a year or longer to heal from the damage of substance abuse. We also offer sober companions, IOP, and an entrepreneurship program. We integrate you into a safe, supportive, dynamic community that walks the path with you whether you are in residential care or not. When you leave our residential care, you keep your client advocate, your treatment team and you remain a part of our community. Through our innovative, individualized care, and supportive community, we give you the best chance at a positive, sustainable outcome.
9. FEAR OF CHANGE: "I'M AFRAID OF WHAT MY LIFE WILL BE LIKE SOBER."
The fear of anything can paralyze us from taking action and moving our lives forward but as daunting as it seems, the only thing waiting for you on the other side of fear is freedom. We have been honored to witness so many lives transform and blossom as a result of sobriety. Goals and dreams you never thought were even possible can become real by stepping through that fear and beginning the process of a journey to recovery. At Red Door Life we understand that getting sober can feel like an identity crisis, and with us, you don’t go through that alone. Your customized treatment team, 24-7 recovery partners, and your new-found community is here to compassionately help you through that. We build sober world rediscovery into our individualized treatment plans. We help our clients form new bonds, repair old ones, transform areas of their life that are toxic, explore the surrounding world, and discover what they like, don’t like, what triggers them, (and how to deal with that safely) and also discover new paths and passions.
10. PEER INFLUENCE: "MY FRIENDS DON'T THINK I NEED IT."
Social deterrents are a very common factor in both the prevention of people getting help and the contribution of high relapse rates. When one struggles with substance abuse, often the people around them are involved in the same lifestyle. We are not really able to get an accurate assessment from others who are also abusing substances or from those who don’t know the truth of what we may be hiding. It is important to separate from others' opinions and honestly assess the world you have created around you. Then you can decide for yourself if you are on the path to happiness, success, and fulfillment. You can see the truth and find the very personal answer to the question, “Do I need help?”.
11. FEELING UNWORTHY: "I DON'T DESERVE TO GET BETTER."
Unworthiness is one of the most difficult negative core beliefs to challenge because you have been suffering with that for so long that you might actually believe it to be true. You may have even done things in your substance use that further compound negative beliefs about yourself. That is almost a given, as substance abuse causes us to act out of character. But we have all made mistakes and they don’t define who you really are as a person. The reality is you are worthy of all of the incredible gifts life has to offer and have tremendous potential. With the help of our compassionate staff, supportive community, and evidence-based therapeutic modalities, we empower you to unburden yourself from the chains of those voices that no longer serve you and keep you trapped in a downward spiral. Allow us to help you heal those parts so that you can fully experience your worth and true potential.
12. EMOTIONAL ATTACHMENT: "I RELY ON SUBSTANCES TO COPE WITH MY EMOTIONS."
Drugs and alcohol do technically work to suppress difficult emotions. But they do not heal what is causing these emotions and they do not improve our circumstances. In fact, the opposite is true- they create more circumstances that create more difficult emotions and problems. In that sense, the relief we feel from abusing substances is a lie. At Red Door Life we believe in working on the roots of what is causing difficult emotions, nervous system dysregulation, mental health issues, trauma, anxiety, depression, insomnia, etc. Red Door Life is here to help you heal past trauma and evolve out of old emotional patterns. We provide you with a toolbox for life that will arm you with new ways of coping with these triggers in a safe and effective way that allows you to realize your own inner strength with the help of a supportive therapeutic community.
13. CONCERNS ABOUT PRIVACY: "I DON'T WANT ANYONE TO KNOW I'M IN REHAB."
Privacy and discretion are of the utmost priority here at Red Door Life, as the leading treatment center for many executives and creatives in the Hollywood/ Los Angeles entertainment industry. We go above and beyond to provide a private sanctuary for healing nestled in the Hollywood Hills on our private gated road, where our Bel-Air estates are located. Guests are required to sign Non-Disclosure Agreements and optionally, private in-home concierge treatment is available for those that wish to receive services in the privacy of their own home. Contact us today to find out more about these exclusive options.
14. CULTURAL/RELIGIOUS BELIEFS: "MY CULTURE/RELIGION DOESN'T SUPPORT REHAB."
Addiction is non-discriminatory. It affects every race, gender, creed, religion, and socio-economic class. With that in mind, we here at Red Door Life understand the importance of bringing one’s own religious beliefs into your treatment plan. Our team has worked to integrate Pastors, Imams, Rabbis, Gurus, and other religious figures that are crucial into one’s recovery. We also work with our client’s family members who may have cultural judgment or condemnation towards substance abuse to understand this nuanced disease so that bonds can be healed and stigma minimized. Through our groundbreaking partnership with Cedar-Sinai Medical Center, we have been able to bring Western therapeutic modalities to traditional Eastern medicine cultures with immense success. We are working to bridge the gap between cultures and relieve the stigma to allow the broadest spectrum of people the best level of care in the world.
15. LACK OF MOTIVATION: "I'M NOT READY TO QUIT YET."
Most of us who have been in recovery have had this thought, way more than once. When things in your life don’t seem too bad, when the bills are still getting paid and there is a roof over your head, you might not think you’re ready to quit and that’s understandable. We lovingly encourage you to ask yourself the questions “Am I happy? When was the last time I smiled? How many truly close, mutually beneficial friendships am I able to maintain? Are my dreams and goals unfolding as I hoped? What does the path I am on look like in 10 years? Where in my life am I doing damage? What areas in my life are lacking or stagnant?” If the answers to any of those questions are hard to answer, then you might not be ready to quit… but you might be ready to try! Call us today to start the conversation.
16. NOT KNOWING WHERE TO START: "I DON'T KNOW HOW TO GET INTO REHAB."
Well, you made it this far, so you know a lot more than you think! Getting into treatment only seems like a daunting task because chances are there are lots of external stressors adding to your goal of getting help. Let us help you by walking you through the process and holding your hand with compassion as you begin this journey. It only takes one phone call to realize how much support we can offer in this transition. Whether it is helping you make arrangements or pairing you with a sober companion to help you transition into residential care- we are with you every step of the way as we truly understand how difficult this decision can be. And yes, we are pet-friendly!
17. MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT REHAB: "I THINK REHAB IS JUST FOR EXTREME CASES."
Sure, rehabs are for extreme cases, but they are also for cases of people who want to stop the pain where they are at this moment. People who are still functional in their lives but need to get out of their environment for a while and have the support of community and holistic 24/7 care. We work with high-acuity cases, but we also offer short-term stays and custom immersives. Don’t wait until your case becomes extreme to come to treatment, the longer you abuse substances the more damage is done to your life and body and the harder recovery can be. If you are struggling, you are welcome right now, exactly as you are. Allow us to meet you where you’re at and begin the journey of healing.
